Looking for something to satisfy your appetite for power? Try a big Mak! For the most demanding enthusiast, our Orion 180mm Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope sets a new standard for superb high-power performance in a remarkably compact design. With 7" of aperture and that long focal length that Maksutov aficionados love, you'll get tack-sharp, high-contrast views and spectacular photographs brimming with subtle detail.
We have upgraded the Orion 180mm Maksutov-Cassegrain with a 2" visual back, so now it accommodates a 2" diagonal and 2" eyepieces (it previously came equipped with just a 1.25" visual back)! What's more, the threads on which the 2" visual back attach are SCT (Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope) threads, which are 2" diameter x 24 TPI male threads. So you can remove the visual back to thread on an optional SCT-specific diagonal or camera adapters designed for SCT threads. Along with the 2" visual back we include a 2" to-1.25" step down adapter to allow use of 1.25" accessories, if desired.
The Orion 180mm Maksutov-Cassegrain (7.1") Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope optical system has a 2700mm focal length (f/15). With 44% greater light grasp than a 150mm Mak, you'll get brighter images and better resolution. No other optical design can deliver such potent optical specifications in a package that measures just 22" long and weighs in at less than 16 lbs. The meniscus lens is fully multicoated for maximum light transmission, further enhancing image brightness. A large rubber-covered focusing knob on the rear sell moves the primary mirror incrementally to enable precise, sharp focus. A dovetail finder base on the rear cell accepts any Orion finder scope or EZ Finder. The Vixen-style aluminum dovetail rail on the underside of the tube provides a solid connection to any compatible mount.
Our biggest Mak offers the amazing image definition Maks are known for, but with a hefty 7" of aperture for brighter images. Whether your passion is visual astronomy or high-power solar system imaging, the newly upgraded Orion 180mm Maksutov-Cassegrain will up your game to the next level of awesomeness!

Beginner Level - Suited for a wide range of uses, these products are simple to operate and set up. Some initial assembly may be required depending on the type of product. Optical instruments with this rating will have very good optical and mechanical quality. Great for families, young people, and folks who don't want to mess with equipment and complexity. Beginning level telescopes will show you countless lunar craters, Saturn's rings and a myriad of star clusters and nebulae! Referring to the manual is recommended.
Intermediate Level - These products offer higher performance and more advanced features than Level 1: Beginner models. They typically take a bit longer to learn and need some set-up or adjustments. But anyone with the slightest technical bent will have no problem getting familiar with these models. Referring to the manual is recommended.
Advanced Level - These products provide the best performance but may require more skill to master and appreciate. Optical instruments with this rating have exceptionally fine optics and mechanics. Some are easy to use but might be on the large or heavy side. Some are intended for specialized uses. These products will appeal to the more technically inclined. Referring to the manual is highly recommended.
For telescopes, the optical diameter (also known as aperture) is the size of a telescope's main light-collecting lens or primary mirror, measured in millimeters or inches. Telescopes with larger optical diameters collect more light, which leads to an increase in brightness and image resolution compared to smaller instruments.
For binoculars, the optical diameter (also known as objective lens diameter) is the size of each of the front-facing objective lenses of a binocular measured in millimeters. Binoculars with larger objective lenses collect more light, which increases image resolution and brightness. Binoculars with larger objective lenses are recommended for low light situations, and binoculars with at least 50mm or larger objective lenses are recommended for pleasing astronomical observations at night.
