The venerable Atlas EQ-G Computerized GoTo Mount provides stable support for your telescope while executing precise object location and accurate motorized tracking and guiding. With its 40-lb. payload capacity, this equatorial stalwart can reliably hold a great variety of optical tube assemblies that most intermediate and advanced amateur astronomers use today, whether that be for visual application or astrophotography.
And for spring of 2021 the Atlas EQ-G Mount's drive panel has been upgraded with some new features, like a USB port for control from a PC running 3rd party astronomy software, a shutter release port for DSLR exposure control, threaded power cable connector, and RJ-45 snap-in hand controller port.
The Atlas EQ-G has become a favorite of amateur astronomers and astrophotographers all over the globe thanks to its consistent tracking and guiding performance, accurate GoTo functionality, and excellent combination of heavy duty stability and reasonable portability for remote use. Its included GoTo hand controller boasts a database of over 42,000 stars and deep-sky objects, including the complete Messier, NGC, and IC catalogs. Once an object is centered, internal DC stepper motors track the object at one of three available tracking rates: sidereal, lunar, or solar. Choose from nine slew rates ranging from 2x to 800x sidereal. A red-illuminated polar axis scope comes standard and makes polar alignment easy and accurate. The drive plate has a built-in autoguider port for precision astrophotographic guiding.
The Atlas EQ-G's equatorial head is supported on a beefy tripod with 2"-diameter stainless steel legs and an aluminum spreader plate that enhances tripod rigidity and doubles as an accessory tray.
Here is a closer look at some of the Atlas EQ-G's superior features:
Once a simple alignment procedure is completed, the Atlas EQ-G mount's included GoTo hand controller lets you select an object from intuitive menus, and then command the mount?s dual stepper motors to automatically pinpoint it. If you're not sure what to look for in the vast starry skies, choose the Tour function to have the Atlas EQ-G lead you to the best objects visible on that night.
The Atlas EQ-G?s drive panel boasts upgraded features, including a USB port for controlling the mount from a PC using 3rd party software, a threaded power cable jack, a snap-in hand controller jack that replaces the 9-pin serial jack, and a SNAP port for controlling a DSLR camera directly from the hand controller.
The included illuminated polar-axis scope makes accurate polar alignment quick and easy, while backlash compensation and programmable PEC provide the responsiveness needed for astrophotography pursuits.
Strong and solid, the Atlas EQ-G weighs in at 54 pounds and includes two 11-pound counterweights. Thanks to its rock-solid construction, the Atlas EQ-G can support a payload of up to 40 lbs., though for astrophotography we'd recommend a maximum of about 20 lbs.
The versatile Atlas EQ-G mount head sports a dual-width dovetail saddle that allows secure attachment of either narrow "Vixen-style" or wider "Losmandy-style" dovetail mounting plates.
The Atlas EQ-G requires an external 12-volt DC power source, such as an Orion Dynamo Pro (sold separately) or AC-to-DC wall adapter (sold separately) for motorized operation. Total weight without counterweights is 54 lbs. The EQ head, which weighs 38.2 lbs., uncouples from the tripod with a single knob for easier portability.

Beginner Level - Suited for a wide range of uses, these products are simple to operate and set up. Some initial assembly may be required depending on the type of product. Optical instruments with this rating will have very good optical and mechanical quality. Great for families, young people, and folks who don't want to mess with equipment and complexity. Beginning level telescopes will show you countless lunar craters, Saturn's rings and a myriad of star clusters and nebulae! Referring to the manual is recommended.
Intermediate Level - These products offer higher performance and more advanced features than Level 1: Beginner models. They typically take a bit longer to learn and need some set-up or adjustments. But anyone with the slightest technical bent will have no problem getting familiar with these models. Referring to the manual is recommended.
Advanced Level - These products provide the best performance but may require more skill to master and appreciate. Optical instruments with this rating have exceptionally fine optics and mechanics. Some are easy to use but might be on the large or heavy side. Some are intended for specialized uses. These products will appeal to the more technically inclined. Referring to the manual is highly recommended.
