Featuring rugged yet lightweight carbon fiber construction, this telescope and tripod combo is easy to take along on your next adventure. The included Orion ED66CF Carbon Fiber Refractor Telescope and Orion Tritech CFX Carbon Fiber Tripod with 3-Way Pan Head will deliver awesome views of terrestrial targets during the day and celestial objects after sunset. The versatile Orion ED66 CF Refractor features fully multi-coated FPL-51 ED glass optics, a dual-speed Crayford focuser, and a carbon fiber optical tube. This portable refractor's f/6.1 focal ratio, premium ED optics and small size make it a great telescope to bring along on road trips. The extra-low dispersion (ED) optics provide exquisite, true-color views without any color-fringing for amazing optical performance. You'll be impressed by the ED66's performance under starry skies as you enjoy crisp, true-color views of the Moon, planets, and brighter deep sky objects. Thanks to the included Deluxe 45-degree diagonal, you can use the ED66 during the day to obtain sharp, color-correct views of earthbound objects and scenery. The ED66 CF features a carbon fiber optical tube, which is lighter and more thermally stable than metal to deliver crisp views even when temperatures fluctuate. The telescope's rotatable Crayford focuser made of CNC-machined aluminum provides dual-speed focus adjustment perfect for dialing in fine details of celestial and terrestrial targets. An included 14mm focal length, 1.25" wide-field 65° eyepiece yields 29x magnification. The included Deluxe 45° Correct-Image Diagonal boasts a large, 27mm clear aperture and a multi-coated prism which provides clear, high-contrast views that are right-side-up and correct left-to-right. An included hard carry case with die-cut foam insert keeps the ED66 CF telescope and included accessories safe and clean during storage and transport. Thanks to its carbon fiber construction, the included Orion Tritech CFX Tripod is about 30% lighter than metal tripods of similar size. Plus, the carbon fiber tripod legs also dampen vibrations more effectively compared to metal tripods for steadier performance and more stable images. The Tritech CFX tripod legs boast three extendable sections with robust flip-lever leg locks for fast setup, takedown, and length adjustments. What's more, each tripod leg can be set at four different angle positions for optimal setup on any terrain. Threaded rubber feet at the end of each tripod leg can be retracted to expose metal spikes for extra stability in especially rugged settings. On top of the tripod sits a sturdy machined aluminum fluid pan-head with three axes of motion and two twist-lock handle grips for exceptionally smooth altitude and tilt control. The two twist-lock handle grips are delightfully easy to locate and manipulate while peering through the attached telescope. A handy bubble-level on the pan head provides an easy way to ensure attached instruments are kept level when desired. The Tritech CFX collapses down to just 29" long for convenient transport and storage. Includes a fully padded soft carry case with shoulder strap.

Beginner Level - Suited for a wide range of uses, these products are simple to operate and set up. Some initial assembly may be required depending on the type of product. Optical instruments with this rating will have very good optical and mechanical quality. Great for families, young people, and folks who don't want to mess with equipment and complexity. Beginning level telescopes will show you countless lunar craters, Saturn's rings and a myriad of star clusters and nebulae! Referring to the manual is recommended.
Intermediate Level - These products offer higher performance and more advanced features than Level 1: Beginner models. They typically take a bit longer to learn and need some set-up or adjustments. But anyone with the slightest technical bent will have no problem getting familiar with these models. Referring to the manual is recommended.
Advanced Level - These products provide the best performance but may require more skill to master and appreciate. Optical instruments with this rating have exceptionally fine optics and mechanics. Some are easy to use but might be on the large or heavy side. Some are intended for specialized uses. These products will appeal to the more technically inclined. Referring to the manual is highly recommended.
Also commonly referred to as "power", magnification is a measure of how much closer an object appears when viewed through the instrument. For example, a 10x binocular will make an object appear 10-times closer than it would normally appear. An object positioned 100 yards away would appear as if it was just 10 yards away in a binocular with 10x magnification. The human eye is considered 1x magnification.
For telescopes, the optical diameter (also known as aperture) is the size of a telescope's main light-collecting lens or primary mirror, measured in millimeters or inches. Telescopes with larger optical diameters collect more light, which leads to an increase in brightness and image resolution compared to smaller instruments.
For binoculars, the optical diameter (also known as objective lens diameter) is the size of each of the front-facing objective lenses of a binocular measured in millimeters. Binoculars with larger objective lenses collect more light, which increases image resolution and brightness. Binoculars with larger objective lenses are recommended for low light situations, and binoculars with at least 50mm or larger objective lenses are recommended for pleasing astronomical observations at night.
Binocular lenses and prisms are often coated with anti-reflective material to minimize light loss as light travels through the multiple optical surfaces of a typical binocular. Coatings help maximize the amount of light transmitted through each glass surface of a binocular, so as much light as possible reaches the observer's eyes to provide a bright and sharp image.
Good lenses are at least "fully coated," with a single layer of magnesium fluoride coating applied to each air-to-glass lens surface. Multiple layers of coatings are even more effective; the term "multi-coated" means one or more air-to-glass lens surface has multiple coatings. "Fully multi-coated" optics are even better, meaning all lens surfaces have multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings applied for maximum light transmission and optimal image quality.
