Great beginner scope. I won this at a raffle and have enjoyed it everyday, I live in AZ so winter month is great stargazing weather. Scope is easy to set up, less than 10 minutes, and tons of fun for family with kids.
Eyepieces included are good for moon viewing and decent for deep space. invest in other eyepieces. The finder scope is terrible. Mine does not focus but does a OK job of getting you in the area. The mount is solid and light weight and great for traveling. The kids and I truly enjoy this scope and I will soon be upgrading and hey for the money you can't go wrong.

Santa Claus brought this scope to my boys a few years ago, and after a pretty decent amount of use I can say that it is a n OK, but not great scope with probably more negatives that positives.

The optics are ok, but collimation is nearly impossible (though it did come fairly well-collimated from the factory). This is a Bird-Jones (or Jones-Bird) design scope, which means it has a built in barlow lens that most reflectors do not. As such, laser collimation is not really an option unless you first remove that lens, which is not recommended. Considering that checking collimation with a Cheshire really isnt effective in this scope, it makes getting a good image in your scope much more of a challenge requiring trial and error.

The collimating screws on the scope have little to no give, so in order to do a traditional collimation, you will need to replace the primary mirror collimation screws with longer ones and put small springs around the screws so there is some give. Once you do this, collimation is much easier.

The eyepieces and barlow that come with the scope are not great, but workable if you are looking at the moon and maybe Jupiter or Saturn. I would be surprised if you ever use the 4mm.

The tripod is quite shaky when making adjustments or if even a light breeze comes in. There are ways you can make it more steady, like adding some weights to the legs, but that is not really a fix, more of a bandage.

Focusing is very sensitive with this scope. You can get a good focused image, but it will take some patience.

The finderscope that comes with the scope is fairly poor. That was the first thing I replaced.

There are some decent accessories you can get with this scope, like the motordrive. With that accessory and some higher quality eyepieces, this scope has the possibility of working pretty well for you if you are a beginner. There are definitely better options out there if you are willing to put a little more money into the investment (remember the purchase of a telescope can and should be a lifetime investment in astronomy).

Take your time, do your research, and possibly consider something that will work a little better for your needs than this scope. You will be happy you did.

Just an aside, I am considering taking this scope, getting a solar filter for it, and using it exclusively for solar observation. That may breathe new life into this scope and could be something to consider as you make your purchase.

Comments about Celestron PowerSeeker 127 EQ Telescope:

Purchased this and it was way out of collimation and near impossible to recollimate. Prepare to spend at least 6 hours to get the mirrors even remotely aligned. Tripod is a lightweight aluminium and about as sturdy as a coke can. Equtorial knobs barely function as intended. Overall a complete waste of money and space. Best bet is to spend a little more money on an orion telescope, much better quality and 50x easier to collimate.

        Customer Q & A

        1 - 5 of 12
            1   2

Q1: Does this telescope come with a tripod? Is this a good choice for viewing planets (i.e. good enough to get good pictures of Saturn's rings)?

A: The Celestron PowerSeeker 127 DOES come with a tripod. You should be able to get fairly nice, short-exposure photos of Saturn's rings through a short-focal-length eyepiece, using a digital camera. You'll need an adapter, though. Zhumell makes a good one, the Universal Digital Camera Adapter (small).

Q2: Will I be able to experience decent views of nebulae and galaxies with this scope? Is there a motor drive available?

A: Yes, with the Powerseeker 127EQ you will be able to see many nebulae and galaxies. There is no motor drive available, however.

Q3: Is their a solar filter for this telescope?

A: The Solar Filter for C5, N5, etc., should fit and work just fine.

Q4: I am a first-time telescope buyer and am not sure if I want to purchase this scope or the Celestron Starhopper 6in Dobsonian. Is the extra $100 really worth the improved quality of the Dobsonian? Which would you recommend?

A: The PowerSeeker 127 EQ is a good beginner's scope. However, the 6-inch aperture of the Starhopper will give you brighter, crisper views. It's worth the extra money.

Q5: Would I be able to view from inside our home? Our windows are double glazed and also tinted.

A: Yes, you would be able to use the Celestron PowerSeeker 127EQ telescope to some degree inside your home. Bear in mind, though, that magnification magnifies EVERYTHING, including imperfections in window glass. That means you'll want to use lower magnification levels inside.
