The finderscope is the only thing I can honestly complain about. I solved that by installing a Celestron Star Pointer Finderscope. Now it's simple to find objects.

I have seen nice views of the moon, the bands of Jupiter, the Flame Nebula, and many other wonders. Once I got the feel for using an equatorial mount, things became much easier.

The images submitted were my first try at imaging. Jupiter in the 10mm Eyepiece was much brighter and sharper.

I'm an amateur astronomer and have a good deal of experience with more advanced telescopes. I bought this for my nephew as an introductory scope. Overall, I'm very pleased with the mirror optics and mount. It delivers good views of the planets and the Orion Nebula. The mount and focusing are stable. The telescope seems mostly rugged and is relatively lightweight.

The main con: I read about people having problems with the finderscope, and can confirm that the finder is absolutely a nightmare. For starters, the battery casing was broken and I could not get the finder to work. Others online recommended taking it apart to solder a wire that tends to break inside the battery compartment. Sure enough, I opened it up and found the wire broken. The finder lit up after I soldered the connector back together. I was shocked to discover that the design of the finder is completely useless for pointing the telescope in the dark. The red dots are not even remotely comparable to better designed Telrad or even Celestron red dot (1x dot projected at infinity) finders. To point the finder, you have to line up two red dots and while your eye is focused on the sky it is impossible to focus on the red dots. So, after trying for several hours, I was unable to calibrate the red dots such that they would help me to point the scope in the correct place. Instead, I had to get it approximately in the correct part of the sky and then scan around. This was frustrating for me, and I know it would be very frustrating for a new user. If you buy this telescope, it is extremely important to also buy and install a finder that works, such as the Celestron red dot finder.

My other complaint concerns the poor quality of the 20 mm eyepiece. It was lightweight, plastic, and inverts the image (bad for astronomical viewing). While the image of the orion nebula was pleasant, the 20 mm does not provide an exceptionally wide field of view. To get the most out of this telescope, consider buying a 40 mm super plossl. You'll be able to see through the scope easier, see the whole moon, and find small objects that are hard to hit with higher magnification. The 10 mm eyepiece was acceptable, but will not deliver a very high level of magnification. Consider also buying a 2x or 3x barlow to enlarge the planets and to use with your 40 mm plossl or just buy a 5 mm plossl eyepiece.

Aside from the finder and the eyepiece, the telescope was a good deal at the discounted price, but I would not recommend buying this scope without also buying a better finder.

Shipping and packaging were incredible and the time to receive was super fast, thank you so much.

The telescope was a bit diffucult to assemble and focus but once that was done, we found an incredible view and we will be star gazing for many years to come. A very nice first time telescope!

Have used it a few times for star gazing. Nice illumination, clear optics. Great equatorial mount. Well written instruction manual explains a lot for a noob. The finder scope however could definitely be improved.

This is my very first telescope and all i can say is wow. I am very impressed. It was very easy to assemble. The weather has been overcast and raining, so i have'nt been able to star gaze yet, but to look at a bird through this scope is remarkable. I am glad I choose this for my first telescope.

              Customer Q & A

              1 - 5 of 8
                  1   2

Q1: Will images in this telescope be upside down?

A: Good question.  The images in this telescope will be right side up as long as you use the 20mm eyepiece that comes with it.  This eyepiece features Erect Image Optics which corrects the image making it ideal for land viewing in addition to sky viewing.  Any other eyepiece will show the image upside down, which is common in reflecting telescopes.

Q2: Does this telescope work with a camera?

A: The AstroMaster telescopes are able to accept camera attachments. However, it’s a completely manual mount so you wont be taking any long exposure, deep-space photography with it. It’s a great telescope for beginners for visual use. If you are really interested in getting into astrophotography, we would highly suggest going with a telescope with complete automatic tracking. Something like the Celestron SE series or SLT series telescopes. To attach a camera, such as a DSLR to the AstroMaster telescopes, you will need a Universal T-Adapter and a T-Ring specific to your camera.

Q3: The focal ratio between the 130 EQ and the 114 EQ are quite different.  What does this effect?

A: More important is the difference in the aperture size, 130mm or 114mm, the larger the aperture, the more light you can gather. The 130 features a shorter focal length and will magnify objects less than the 114mm telescope will, however the more important feature of a telescope is the light gathering ability, so we would always suggest larger aperture over more magnification ability. Most objects in the night sky are viewed between 40x-100x, making either the 130 and 114 qualified. The larger aperture of the 130 makes for a better view of objects.

Q4: Can you see Saturn with this telescope?

A: Saturn is easily viewed in this telescope, and actually in most telescopes. Saturn with its rings will be easy to view in most any telescope. Jupiter and its moons will also be easily visible from this, and all other telescopes. Planets are very bright and easy to view in all telescopes. Galaxies and other deep space objects are also able to be seen with this telescope. The larger your aperture, the more light your telescope can gather. Try not to think of it in “distance” but rather in how much light can you gather, the larger your aperture, your telescope will be able to gather light from these very distant objects.

Q5: Can you use it on a computer?

A: The Celestron Astromaster is not computerized so the unit itself cannot connect to a computer.  This telescope does come with software that will give you a tutorial on the use of the telescope and also provides some star charts.
