Motor Drive Accessory Available

The Celestron Astromaster 114EQ also offers a motor drive accessory (see accessories below).  The motor drive will allow the telescope to continuously track an object without the need to touch the telescope.  The motor drive automatically turns the telescope at a pace to counter the movement of the Earth.  This means if you are looking at Jupiter, there is no need to continue to turn the telescope tracking knobs to keep it in your eyepiece for viewing.  With the motor drive, the object you are viewing stays in your eyepiece the entire time.

The finderscope is the only thing I can honestly complain about. I solved that by installing a Celestron Star Pointer Finderscope. Now it's simple to find objects.

I have seen nice views of the moon, the bands of Jupiter, the Flame Nebula, and many other wonders. Once I got the feel for using an equatorial mount, things became much easier.

The images submitted were my first try at imaging. Jupiter in the 10mm Eyepiece was much brighter and sharper.

I'm an amateur astronomer and have a good deal of experience with more advanced telescopes. I bought this for my nephew as an introductory scope. Overall, I'm very pleased with the mirror optics and mount. It delivers good views of the planets and the Orion Nebula. The mount and focusing are stable. The telescope seems mostly rugged and is relatively lightweight.

The main con: I read about people having problems with the finderscope, and can confirm that the finder is absolutely a nightmare. For starters, the battery casing was broken and I could not get the finder to work. Others online recommended taking it apart to solder a wire that tends to break inside the battery compartment. Sure enough, I opened it up and found the wire broken. The finder lit up after I soldered the connector back together. I was shocked to discover that the design of the finder is completely useless for pointing the telescope in the dark. The red dots are not even remotely comparable to better designed Telrad or even Celestron red dot (1x dot projected at infinity) finders. To point the finder, you have to line up two red dots and while your eye is focused on the sky it is impossible to focus on the red dots. So, after trying for several hours, I was unable to calibrate the red dots such that they would help me to point the scope in the correct place. Instead, I had to get it approximately in the correct part of the sky and then scan around. This was frustrating for me, and I know it would be very frustrating for a new user. If you buy this telescope, it is extremely important to also buy and install a finder that works, such as the Celestron red dot finder.

My other complaint concerns the poor quality of the 20 mm eyepiece. It was lightweight, plastic, and inverts the image (bad for astronomical viewing). While the image of the orion nebula was pleasant, the 20 mm does not provide an exceptionally wide field of view. To get the most out of this telescope, consider buying a 40 mm super plossl. You'll be able to see through the scope easier, see the whole moon, and find small objects that are hard to hit with higher magnification. The 10 mm eyepiece was acceptable, but will not deliver a very high level of magnification. Consider also buying a 2x or 3x barlow to enlarge the planets and to use with your 40 mm plossl or just buy a 5 mm plossl eyepiece.

Aside from the finder and the eyepiece, the telescope was a good deal at the discounted price, but I would not recommend buying this scope without also buying a better finder.

Had the opportunity to break in the new scope on April 15th Lunar eclipse and it was amazing. Was able to get some amazing close ups of the moon and mars.

Also a newbie like me was able to put together easily in about 12 min.

I'm very satisfied with this product. It is well made, it was easy to set up with helpful instructions and a phone number to the company if necessary. My family is psyched to view the sky. Oh, and Kevin the sales guy, was very helpful! I was happy to upgrade my telescope paying a reasonable price. There is a reason this telescope was voted telescope of the year for 2014.

Telescope was delivered on time. Used instructions to put it together and was viewing the moon that night. Still some fine collimating adjustments needed but was able to use right away out of the box with superb results.

Comments about Celestron AstroMaster 114 EQ Reflector Telescope:

I may be writing this too prematurely but my conclusion on the Celestron Astromaster 114EQ is that this is a really great beginner scope. I should mention that I am not an amateur or novice but a true beginner, I don't think I've even looked through a telescope before in my life. But anyways, I wanted one and after searching around this Celestron seemed like a great place to start.

The price of the bundle including the eyepiece/filter set, and motor I think is a sweet deal, and a good idea if you have never owned a scope before.

Now being ignorant it took me over an hour to put it together. The instruction book it came with seemed like overkill so just find a youtube video and you can get it all working in a reasonable amount of time. It took me so long because I was unfamiliar with everything, and it probably wouldn't be as tricky for someone with more experience.

I didn't even bother with the finderscope it comes with (based on dozens of reviews I've read) and got another Celestron model to put on it. Took me a minute to take off the old one, figure out the new one and mount it with some double sided foam tape, but I aligned it pretty quickly.

The filter and eyepiece set is pretty nice and comes with a Barlow X2. I've read the reviews for the pieces in the kit and they are obviously lower end quality and there is some overlap because of the X2 in there... However, I enjoy all of them in addition to learning by doing. To see what eyepiece I need for looking at various things is taking a lot of trial and error but you need to start with the basics. You could save some $ and get a nice zoom eyepiece, but I think the eyepeices in this set are great for a beginner like myself. Forces me to figure out what I need to use and I even enjoyed the 4mm which seems to be universally condemned online as being useless.

I haven't installed the motor yet but it looks easy enough to use and set up. I didn't want to use it initially and instead thought I should manually find and follow everything I could, again to teach myself the ropes.

So I'm figuring it out slowly and it is very basic, which a beginner should be thankful for. My first night out was amazing, the moon was great and I focused in on Jupiter and saw all four moons and two cloud bands. My mind was blown. And keep in mind I was in a horribly light polluted area. I live in the middle of Baltimore City and I am also lucky enough to have the brightest street lamp in the history of the world about 20 ft away from my yard. I cant wait to take this thing out camping and really look around.

I would do some research on the filters and eyepieces to see if the Celestron kit is a good idea for you or you want something different, but I see nothing wrong with this scope being a first time telescope.

Shipping was incredibly fast and makes you wonder why the rest of the internet can't ship a package like these Hayneedle guys.

          Customer Q & A

          1 - 5 of 7
              1   2

Q1: Will images in this telescope be upside down?

A: Good question.  The images in this telescope will be right side up as long as you use the 20mm eyepiece that comes with it.  This eyepiece features Erect Image Optics which corrects the image making it ideal for land viewing in addition to sky viewing.  Any other eyepiece will show the image upside down, which is common in reflecting telescopes.

Q2: The focal ratio between the 130 EQ and the 114 EQ are quite different.  What does this effect?

A: More important is the difference in the aperture size, 130mm or 114mm, the larger the aperture, the more light you can gather. The 130 features a shorter focal length and will magnify objects less than the 114mm telescope will, however the more important feature of a telescope is the light gathering ability, so we would always suggest larger aperture over more magnification ability. Most objects in the night sky are viewed between 40x-100x, making either the 130 and 114 qualified. The larger aperture of the 130 makes for a better view of objects.

Q3: Can you see Saturn with this telescope?

A: Saturn is easily viewed in this telescope, and actually in most telescopes. Saturn with its rings will be easy to view in most any telescope. Jupiter and its moons will also be easily visible from this, and all other telescopes. Planets are very bright and easy to view in all telescopes. Galaxies and other deep space objects are also able to be seen with this telescope. The larger your aperture, the more light your telescope can gather. Try not to think of it in “distance” but rather in how much light can you gather, the larger your aperture, your telescope will be able to gather light from these very distant objects.

Q4: Can you use it on a computer?

A: The Celestron Astromaster is not computerized so the unit itself cannot connect to a computer.  This telescope does come with software that will give you a tutorial on the use of the telescope and also provides some star charts.

Q5: In what packing is it delivered and is it save to carry in that packing from place to place , and whether the packing is rugged and save for carriage.

A: This telescope comes with no case and the packing is a large cardboard box with foam fitted to protect the scope during shipment.  You could carry the telescope in the packaging but it would not offer rugged protection.  The packaging is recommended for storage rather than travel.
