Description

Want to see a hard-to-find, deep-space galaxy? Simply push a button. Want to look at Jupiter? Again, use one finger. The same goes for the moon, the other planets, stars, nebulae, and more. Just pick an object you want to observe, press a button, and the ETX-90AT AutoStar controller will automatically point your telescope to put the desired star, galaxy, or planet right in your eyepiece.

It gets even better, too! Don't know just what you want to see on an evening? Go to the "Tonight's Best" tour in your AutoStar controller. It automatically selects the best objects in the sky for any particular season, time, and location from a built-in database of over 30,000 celestial objects. Then it puts them in the eyepiece for you to view. All you need is a clear night, a dark sky, and a little curiosity. Whether you already know the sky by heart, or are just beginning your journey of discovery, your Meade ETX-90AT will take you where you want to go - conveniently. Truly, astronomy has never been so fun and rewarding!

Maksutov-Cassegrain Optics

The Meade ETX-90AT offers top-quality optics to back up its easy-use features. Serious astronomers for years have flocked to the Meade ETX-90 for its observatory-quality Maksutov-Cassegrain optical system. Its diffraction-limited optics are so bright and crisp in contrast and image resolution that the ETX-90AT consistently out-performs telescopes of larger aperture. ETX-90AT telescopes feature BK-7 glass and oversize Pyrex primary mirrors.

Ultra High Transmission Coatings

As if that isn't quality enough, the ETX-90AT optics are enhanced by Meade UHTC, a series of exotic optical coatings precisely tuned to optimize the visual, photographic and CCD-imaging performance of the ETX telescope. Image brightness is increased by nearly 15% over that offered by standard Meade optical coatings. This means that stars, galaxies, and nebulae observed through your ETX-90AT will be dramatically brighter. Even observations of the Moon and planets will benefit from UHTC's increased image brightness across the full light spectrum.

Includes #884 Deluxe Field Tripod

ETX-90AT telescopes also come with a high-quality tripod to enhance usability. Constructed of strong, lightweight steel, the full-length Meade #884 deluxe field tripod provides a rigid mounting platform for virtually any ETX observing application. It features:

    • Chrome-plated, steel legs
    • Adjustable height
    • Equatorial or altitude-azimuth position
    • Spreader bar
    • Tripod case

Includes AutoStar Suite Astronomer Edition Software

  • Planetarium software for your PC

Out of the box, I had some problems getting it to auto-align. However, after a few false starts, this was solved relatively easily with a trip to the user guide and some very minor adjustment.

First I had to adjust the smart finder so that it was properly aligned with the main tube. This is very easy to do, with two finger screws for horizontal and vertical alignment.

The other trick is to press "?" when the auto-alignment procedure is telling you to center the brightest star. This tells you exactly which star it is asking for, so you don't just center whatever happens to be brightest in the field of view. After it finds level, north and tilt, it can still be off by more than a full viewfinder's worth on its first stab at pointing at a major star. (And if you haven't aligned the smart finder first, like me the first few tries, forget about it. Hey, that's what user guides are for.) You need to know which star it's trying for, so you can correct it properly. Once you get a proper alignment it seems to be fine at picking out objects.

Both of these items are detailed in the manual.

Imaging seems bright and sharp (to this neophyte, anyway, but I was impressed). I got wonderful views of the moon and planets, even in the middle of the light-polluted Bay Area. The motorized mount seems pretty good at tracking what you've pointed it at.

I got this product believing the images it would provide were like those displayed on the meade page from the "so called" casual users taking astrophotography with the product.[...]once I oppened the package I saw that the supposed to be blue tube is in fact violet, with total disregard of that I continued excited installing my telescope, I pulled out the tripod and on one of the sides, where the meade trademark displays I noticed that the sort of label was about to fall as half of it was no longer sticked to the metal but rather hanging, and that the part of the label still attached looked as if it had been hit with a hammer to put it on its place. Not very happy with it I continued considering these just minor details, anyway as I tried to align the smartfinder (not just once but several times using different reference objects either during daylight or at night) I realised that horizontally it aligns perfectly using the knob but vertically it has a gap of aprox 2.5inches, no matter how strong I turn the knob the red dot will not go higher ( I do not want to press the knob even harder as I might just brake it) as you may imagine 2.5 inches on a distant terrestrial object is a lot, imagine that gap on a celestial object it is huge, anyway as I tried to disregard that fact I started with the autostart, which is very easy and comfortable to use except for the fact the it always points at the opposite direction. I entered my zip code as requested, put no on the daylight savings put the scooe in the home position alighned the "hardly" brightest stars (they look just the same with the naked eye as with the scope) "aligment succesful" displayed then I took the guided tour and selected "go to" the moon, the telescope started moving to then stop right on the oposite direction ot the huge brilliant moon standing right behind it; I thought to myself I must have done something wrong, I read through the manual finding nothing on the trouble shooting and reset the telescope to its factory conditions, did the whole process again, this time selecting my city instead of the zip code, again the same problem. I did it yet again putting the scope in the home position, this time turning the horizontal axis to the opposite direction, (not counterclockwise) and still the moon will always appear on a totally different place, sometimes the telescope poits right at a terrestrial object when trying to show me the moon. Need less to say I want my money back, I know my rights as a consummer and this is not AT ALL what I paid for, it seems this telescope has been previously returned and the store was just waiting for another fool to buy it. Hopefully this will appear on the web page and will not be hidden under all the good reviews encouraging enthusiastic people to buy something that will hardly meet their minimun expectations.

Comments about Meade ETX-90AT Astro Telescope with UHTC Coatings:

When I bought my scope I had difficulty with alignment. I would do the autoalign but it wouldn't go to the second star. I took it in and had the folks look at it and we found that the control box was malfunctioning. Replaced the box and everything works as advertised.

          Customer Q & A

Q1: Can one use an ac adapter with the Meade EXT 90?

A: Yes. The AC adapter you will need is listed on our website under the item # MEAD060.

Q2: How does the size of the eyepiece affect magnification? For instance, I found on your site that the 26mm on the 90mm scope gives 48x. Is there a rule of thumb for estimating for other eyepieces?

A: Yes the formula is: Telescope Focal Length divided by Eyepiece Focal Length equals Magnification.

Q3: Does the Meade ETX-90 have AutoAlign?

A: The Meade ETX-90PE Astro Telescope Premier Edition - UHTC Coatings (Blue Tube) comes with Easy Align with SmartFinder.
