I love this telescope! If this is your first telescope, find your local astronomy club and ask someone to show you how to use it to overcome the rather steep learning curve. Like all Meade products, the instructions look like they were written by engineers and take some time to digest.

The views of planets and the moon are incredible thanks to the scope's f/15 focal ratio, which allows you to view a significant amount of detail. In my opinion, it performs equally well on deep sky objects. The Goto accuracy is dead on once you go through the two star alignment process, which takes all of about 2 minutes. Take an extra minute or two to level the telescope with a bubble level (not included) and the alignment process will go much more smoothly and your go-to's will be more accurate.

The tripod is solid and steady. The telescope is a bit on the heavy side, and I prefer to keep the tripod platform level while I'm attaching the telescope, rather than tilting it as the set up directions state.

I've owned a number of Meade AutoStar telescopes, and I've never liked the included AutoStar Suite software. For me, the only redeeming quality of it is that it can be used to create your own guided tours, but it's not required to create the tours. The tours can be uploaded to the handset by using the #505 cable. It's a serial cable, so you'll also need a USB to serial adapter unless you have an old computer with a serial port. Do a search on AutoStar tours and you'll find tours that other people have written that are free to download.

As a substitute for for the included AutoStar Suite program, check out a free program called Stellarium. It won't let you create tours, but it will let you control the telescope and it's fantastic as a learning and planning tool.

Parting advice: Make sure you go through the "Train Drives" process during the day time before using it for the first time. It lets the handset compensate for the minute irregularities present in the gearing mechanisms of all motorized telescopes.

My ETX 125PE arrived with a chip out of the smartfinder lens, half of the battery terminal contacts missing (making it impossible to power up with internal batteries), and a severe motor defect. Power up was possible with external DC power, but the motor drive would only move in three directions. It would not slew left. All alignment and calibration attempts resulted in the dreaded "motor unit fault". No amount of software reset or fiddling helped. [@]was great. They shipped it back and refunded my money. They were out of stock, so I ordered a replacement from another dealer, and it was also DOA! This one wouldn't slew in three of four directions. I discovered that there are many such tales from recent purchasers. Meade's Mak optics are reportedly great, but I can't evaluate. They seem to have a serious QA issue with their low end mount/drive systems. I decided to upgrade to a LX90 (at twice the price). I think too many corners are cut in these lower priced do everything scopes. Do your research!

First one was returned because the reflective material was flaking off of the mirror, the second one has tripod problems, but the scope is better. I don't know if I will ever get it fixed so there are no more problems. not the best quality, hoping I will be able to return. Fix one thing then another thing breaks.
