Comments about Nikon Forestry 550 Hypsometer Rangefinder:
Performs all functions of standard rangefinder however with the extra of the Hypsometer you have the added benefit determining the height of objects. They need to make a cover that shows the LCD but comes in CAMO for hunting.

Comments about Nikon Forestry 550 Hypsometer Rangefinder:
I use this Rangefinder in my work as a Crane Rigging Superintendent. Working in the mountains of Colorado and Utah, the height of the treetops are a concern when on-site for home and commercial construction. I like this product and would recommend it. However, I do wish that it would measure less than the 30' minimum.

Comments about Nikon Forestry 550 Hypsometer Rangefinder:
We are using the Nikon for field research measurements such as horizontal distance, slope distance, slope angle, and tree height. It performs well as long as you have a clear view of the target. "Shooting" between branches sometimes takes several attempts, but that is no different than other laser measurement devices. Accuracy seems to be as advertised (<1%), and it is considerable less expensive than most alternatives. The instructions are poor, but the small summary sheet is understandable and is all that you really need. We wish is had a horizontal angle feature so that distances between two objects in front of you could be caluculated, but that's really pretty minor. The unit also does not calculate distances less than 10 meters

Q1: How far can I measure distances using this device? Am I correct that if I wanted to measure the height of the top of a building while standing on the street, this rangefinder would do the trick? Do I have to do any trig or does the device automatically make all the calculations such that the LCD simply gives the height measurement? If the rangefinder doesn't say hypsometer does that mean it doesn't measure heights?
A: The maximum range is 550 yards. The device has the ability to measure vertical objects as well as horizontal objects. If a rangefinder does not have a hypsometer feature, it will not be able to measure heights accurately.
