OK, I love these Monoculars, But you need to have a pretty good source of light to truly benefit from them, such as a partial Moon and clear sky, otherwise IMHO, I don't think the infrared that is built in does that good of a job (but what can you expect from the price). In pitch dark when you activate the infrared it is spotty at best when you have to turn your head side to side, then it gets to bright with no picture. Believe me, I have adjusted these things to the best of my ability! Also, you cannot see as far (as the specifications say) after you have made the adjustments. This really is the only negative I have noticed about them. The positives are: (1) The Price (well worth the money), (2) You can see up to distances of about 500ft or so, (3) Great with clear skies and some moonlight(these monoculars are at there BEST then)! (4) They are great for just observing wildlife, and (5) Just buy them, you will not regret it!

Not for the backyard
This might work in a cave but not under normal backyard conditions.

Comments about Bushnell Night Watch 4x50 Night Vision Monocular with Built-In IR:
My order arrived in a timely fashion and nicely packaged. Also they have a nice website here. It works as advertised and for a Gen1 NVG works well. I would recommend this one to anyone reading this review. For the price it is a good purchase. For those maybe unfamiliar with night vision technology and looking for a starter model this one is good. Just keep in mind, it is Gen 1 and too much light around is bad, and the distances the all advertise are best case scenarios and typically not what you will really get. Also it will not autofocus so if you are moving you need to reset yourself and possibly dial it back in anytime you want to look through it again.Just do not expect it to work like a Gen 2 or 3 or what you may see in movies you will be ok. You can always order a gen 3 or 3+ totally waste money on a Gen 4 model that even the military won't use if you do want that, but instead of paying [$] you will be paying $2999 dollars ;)

This night monocular is of great quality and value within the budget I had to work with. If you are comfortable using monocular instead of binocular it is terrific with easy focus and operation

Q1: Can I use this with a tripod?
A: You sure can! This monocular has the threading needed for mounting this directly to a tripod.
Q2: Would this work well for spotting raccoons or coyotes?
A: This would work quite well for this purpose. It gives you plenty of range, and enough detail to identify the object.
