A: A monocular should work. The Alpen 10x32 Monocular will make objects appear to be 10 times as close as they actually are. That means if you can read a data plate at 2 feet, you should be able to read it at 18 or 20 feet. Likewise, if you can read the plate at 1 foot, you should be able to read it at 10 feet.

The 32mm aperture will give reasonably bright images on cloudy days, and 10X magnification will bring those distant electric meters 10 times as close as they actually are. That means a meter that's 50 feet away will appear to be only 5 feet distant through the Monocular. At 30 feet, it would appear to be 3 feet, etc.
