I've tried numerous monoculars over the years and the image quality was never good enough to bother with them. It was either the much bigger and heavier compact binoculars or nothing. This Minox unit is compact enough to very easily fit in a shirt pocket (the rectangular shape fits better than a round monocular would). As a result I take it with me a lot more places.It focuses well, but the focus slider is a little touchy. I quickly learned to move it slowly. But once set for a particular distance, it is all set.I just leave it in the car. Not only is it there whenever I start a hike, but it can save driving across the street to check store hours, or read a distant sign, etc.The serious birder should stick with their thousand dollar binoculars. But for someone trying to save weight, at 3 ounces, these are far more compact than small, [$] binoculars with as good or better image quality.It is now a standard item in my backstock of gifts. I always keep mine but have given away several now.

Since I bought one for my own use I have purchased 3 more as gifts for others. It is a high quality monocular, easy to carry in your pocket anywhere- great to see the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or the bird out the kitchen window.
