This product is a significant upgrade from the sub-[$]budget monoculars [...]. The build quaity seems excellent, the large focus ring is smooth, and the zoom is handy, but not essential. Anything beyond 10-15x becomes very difficult to keep steady, but it is there if you want it and the monocular can be mounted to a tripod for stabilization. Also, this model seems to focus pretty close, which the budget models do not do. It would be nice if Brunton would just make a fixed 10x model and lower the price, but even at [$]the Echo Zoom is worth it.Regarding the breakage mentioned in the other review, it doesn't seem like this model would be any more fragile than a similar or lesser model. In fact, it seems to me that it is built strong and would survive a fall, but I'm not going to test that.Based on my initial experience, the Echo Zoom is probably the best in class. It also received recognition from National Geographic Adventure with a 2008 Gear of the Year Award.

The prospect of a 10-30x zoom may sound enticing, but don't be fooled --- it is really a gimic. The poor optical quality of the zoom makes it worthless. When I tried reading a distant license plate at 10x vs 20x vs 30x there was no real improvement in resolution. The high zoom levels have way too much distortion and limited light transmission. Save your money and buy a decent 10x non-zoom monocular instead.

Ever been traveling and wish you could see farther up the mountain, Buckingham Palace from the top of the London Eye, a boat on the Rhine or the clock in old Prague? This monocular will give you the up close look and easily fits in a jacket pocket. Go see the world and take this little guy along.

Comments about Brunton Echo 10-30x21 Zoom Monocular:

I didn't really expect astronomical viewing quality,,,not all that able to see in a low light conditions or perfectly, crisp images; but when adjusting for the full magnification, there is a small, blurry black smudge of a dot in the middle. It is not seen at 10 power, but, it starts appearing about half way up to 30 power. Irritating, as it appears to be a fleck of dust inside the monocle...but I don't think it really is. There is no easy way to, say, unscrew the barrel to open it up and clean the lenses. Probably just some optical inadequacy. Plus, they provided a lens cap for only the eyepiece end, and not the larger objective lens on the other end, which is more likely to get scratched than the eyepiece. It is good they actually provided a standard threaded camera mounting so it can be stabilized. Using only your hand to view thirty power is very shaky. I expected that.
