This product is a significant upgrade from the sub-[$]budget monoculars [...]. The build quaity seems excellent, the large focus ring is smooth, and the zoom is handy, but not essential. Anything beyond 10-15x becomes very difficult to keep steady, but it is there if you want it and the monocular can be mounted to a tripod for stabilization. Also, this model seems to focus pretty close, which the budget models do not do. It would be nice if Brunton would just make a fixed 10x model and lower the price, but even at [$]the Echo Zoom is worth it.Regarding the breakage mentioned in the other review, it doesn't seem like this model would be any more fragile than a similar or lesser model. In fact, it seems to me that it is built strong and would survive a fall, but I'm not going to test that.Based on my initial experience, the Echo Zoom is probably the best in class. It also received recognition from National Geographic Adventure with a 2008 Gear of the Year Award.

The prospect of a 10-30x zoom may sound enticing, but don't be fooled --- it is really a gimic. The poor optical quality of the zoom makes it worthless. When I tried reading a distant license plate at 10x vs 20x vs 30x there was no real improvement in resolution. The high zoom levels have way too much distortion and limited light transmission. Save your money and buy a decent 10x non-zoom monocular instead.

Comments about Brunton Echo 10-30x21 Zoom Monocular:

I found it difficult to keep my hand steady enough to prevent shaking, especially when using the 20X or 30X magnification. It is good for watching birds from my window using the 10X magnification, especially since I can lean my elbows on the window sill.

Overall I really like this product. It is better than what you would expect for the price. It is fantastic up to 20 power then it is hard to focus. I hate the loose lens cover.
