This product is a significant upgrade from the sub-[$]budget monoculars [...]. The build quaity seems excellent, the large focus ring is smooth, and the zoom is handy, but not essential. Anything beyond 10-15x becomes very difficult to keep steady, but it is there if you want it and the monocular can be mounted to a tripod for stabilization. Also, this model seems to focus pretty close, which the budget models do not do. It would be nice if Brunton would just make a fixed 10x model and lower the price, but even at [$]the Echo Zoom is worth it.Regarding the breakage mentioned in the other review, it doesn't seem like this model would be any more fragile than a similar or lesser model. In fact, it seems to me that it is built strong and would survive a fall, but I'm not going to test that.Based on my initial experience, the Echo Zoom is probably the best in class. It also received recognition from National Geographic Adventure with a 2008 Gear of the Year Award.

The prospect of a 10-30x zoom may sound enticing, but don't be fooled --- it is really a gimic. The poor optical quality of the zoom makes it worthless. When I tried reading a distant license plate at 10x vs 20x vs 30x there was no real improvement in resolution. The high zoom levels have way too much distortion and limited light transmission. Save your money and buy a decent 10x non-zoom monocular instead.

This monocular will give you the up close look and easily fits in a jacket pocket. Go see the world and take this little guy along.

Comments about Brunton Echo 10-30x21 Zoom Monocular:

I didn't really expect astronomical viewing quality,,,not all that able to see in a low light conditions or perfectly, crisp images; but when adjusting for the full magnification, there is a small, blurry black smudge of a dot in the middle. It is not seen at 10 power, but, it starts appearing about half way up to 30 power. Irritating, as it appears to be a fleck of dust inside the monocle...but I don't think it really is. There is no easy way to, say, unscrew the barrel to open it up and clean the lenses. Probably just some optical inadequacy. Plus, they provided a lens cap for only the eyepiece end, and not the larger objective lens on the other end, which is more likely to get scratched than the eyepiece. It is good they actually provided a standard threaded camera mounting so it can be stabilized. Using only your hand to view thirty power is very shaky. I expected that.

Comments about Brunton Echo 10-30x21 Zoom Monocular:

As with all high power opticals, anything over 10x requires a support to keep it steady. This should be expected, and Brunton has put in a tripod receiver. I have not used that yet and definately will.
This monocular is light, compact, and easy to use. It will focus (on 10x) at about 20 feet. It is easy to work the focus and zoom, and both my wife and I love it for that. The only problems were that when trying to look through a window with a screen in place is very poor. But as soon as we went to another window without a screen, everything was great.

Comments about Brunton Echo 10-30x21 Zoom Monocular:

I found it difficult to keep my hand steady enough to prevent shaking, especially when using the 20X or 30X magnification. It is good for watching birds from my window using the 10X magnification, especially since I can lean my elbows on the window sill.

Q1: The 10 means the magnification but what does the 30x21 mean?

A: This mean it's adjustable to 30x power and the objective lens is 21mm.

Q2: Does the Brunton Echo- zoom monocular have any eye relief? And if it does, how much?

A: The eye relief on this monocular is 12mm.

Q3: What is the close focus?

A: The close focusing distance is 10 ft.
