      i was given a free pair of Alpen 8 x 21 monoculars[...]. they are nearly identical to a Simmons 8 x 21 monocular that i already owned. but there is one slight difference. these have a better and more clear picture. i spotted some turkeys in a field about 300 yards from me. with my Simmons i couldn't tell the jakes apart from the hens. then i looked at them through the Alpen monocular and could see 1-2 inch beards on 3 jakes which i couldn't see on my Simmons. GREAT optics for the price hands down!

      I got this for my daughter to take on a national park trip, and the idea of it pleased her greatly. It was easy for her to locate the subject, but the magnification and lower light in the viewer meant that it came out of the nice little bag less often. On the other hand, one must unfortunately consider the child's age before giving a fancier, pricier item, eh? Fun for games and will be used around the neighborhood and in the yard.

        This gets 5 stars because of the price. That said, you get far more than what you pay for. This is not a super bright, contrasty optic, but for the price you can have one in your car, in your every day carry bag, jacket pocket, and never be without a scope.

        You will typically know when you will be wanting a high quality optic with you, but for all those other times this really fits the bill!

                    Comments about Alpen 8x21 Monocular:

                    I bought this as an experiment before investing in something "better". This is a great scope to answer the occasional "what's that thing over there?". BUT the lense is dark and the focus is kind of narrow, so i can't see myself enjoying long term viewing. The Magnification is fine if you are looking for something to keep in a bag or glove compartment - you won't be dissapointed. My advice? If you are looking for something to pack for deliberate veiwing - skip this model. This is a great first scope for a kid, or a week! But I'm already ready to move up.

                    Q1: I wear glasses. Does this have a long relief?

                    A: This, like many compact monoculars, have very short eye relief and would not be ideal for use with eyeglasses.

                    Q2: What are the length and diameter measurements in inches?

                    A: The unit measures 3.75 inches by 1.25 inches.

                    Q3: what is the minimum focus distance?

                    A: Close focus distance is approximately 15 feet.

                    Q4: At fifty yards, how wide is the field, and what would the magnification be?

                    A: At 50 yards, the field would be about 18 yards. Magnification remains 8X no matter what the range.
