In stating "Exceptional Sharpness" it is easy to confuse this with lens quality. Fujinon certainly has some of the finest lenses on the market, but that is not the point. I always envisoned myself as being able to resolve fine detail even with high powered binocs. I soon found out how my mind had deceived me. Technical resolution and field resolution are entirely different things. Glimpse after glimpse through exceptional binoculars indeed appeared sharp, as did these even when not using the stabilzer. But view the same sight with the stabilizer and it is a different world. The colors of animals went from generalizations [brown] to multiple variations from taupe to siena in specific patterns. In short, the interpolations that I was used to were converted into a magnificent reality. Truly spectacular. Focusing is crystal sharp and quickly achieved. Weight and size does not feel ungainly compared to similar objectives and oculars. An extraordinary plus is also a minus however. They come in a truly fine impregnable waterproof case. But it is not useful for field work. They could use an additional carry case or at least covers for the objective lenses. In my opinion there are no better higher power binoculars. Well worth the cost, if you want to see the details.

I ordered these binoculars to be, primarily, used as a "grab and go" optical instrument for those nights when I didn't feel like bothering to haul out any of my three telescopes, or when a quick look at the night sky was in order. [...]not so great for the field), and to all external appearances was very well-made. First light was during day-light and observing my back-yard birds the instrument behaved very well. Due to this glass being 14 power, the birds were magnified likewise and were relatively easy to observe, especially when they were stationary. If they moved in a direction either toward or away from me, it became a bit more problematic. The 14 power now became somewhat of a liability, as the more power an optic has the shorter is its depth of field, calling for more frequent adjustment of the focus. In addition, as a birding instrument the 40mm objectives, coupled with relatively high power, darkens the image somewhat and some birders in a dark woods setting may feel that there is not sufficient light through-put. ( I did not try them in a dark forest setting.). Most non-astronomers probably don't know this, but most of the less-expensive binoculars will, for most people, perform generally satisfactorily on day-light objects and even on the moon. The differences in optical quality become much more apparent when observing stars. Stars are "point objects", which means that the finest instruments will show them as tiny points, rather than blobs, and the brighter a star, the more important this fact is. This also applies to a correction in fine lenses, which tries to eliminate as much "chromatic aberration" (or false color) as possible. There, again, the edges of the brightest astronomical objects show the most false color. In testing the Fujinon Techno-stabi binoculars on the night sky, the moon appeared sharp and without much false color.(The moon appears sharp in most binoculars). On the stars the story was somewhat different. For the life of me I was unable to get the left side in pin-point focus. The right side was better, but because these are stabilized binoculars there is no provision on them for mounting on a tripod, so I couldn't really check them for perfect focus. As far as the stabilization is concerned, try as I might I couldn't get the stellar images to totally stop moving. I attribute this to a combination of both the heavy, bulky binoculars these are, the angle necessary to observe the skies and my being used to having perfectly still stellar views through good astronomical telescopes. In summation, I feel that the Fujinon Techno-stabi 14x40 binoculars are very well-made,and have a niche market for long-distance hunting, surveillance, marine work and, for some, bird-watching, however binoculars in this size, weight and power range are best when supported by a tripod for astronomical observing. They aren't worthless for the occasional astronomical outing, but at their price I feel there are better options. To be fair, Fujinon does not advertise these glasses to be used for astronomy.

        Customer Q & A
        1 - 5 of 7
            1   2

Q1: What kind of warranty comes with these binoculars?

A: This product comes with a one year warranty against manufacturer defects.  For information on this warranty, please feel free to contact us at 1.800.246.6285.

Q2: 1. Are these considered night vision? 2. Does a stabilized unit come in 10x50, or 7x50?

A: I am sorry but no, these are not Night Vision. They do not make the Image stabilized binoculas in 10x50 or 7x50 yet either the 7x50 you wouldn't need IS as the magnification being lower allows you to use them hand held.

Q3: Where can I get repair service in the San Diego California area?

A: You would need to contact Fujinon directly for that, unfortunately we do not repair these items. You can reach Fujinon directly at (800) 833-0196.

Q4: What batteries do these binoculars use & how long before they need to be replaced?

A: These require 4AA batteries which will last for approximately three hours of continuous use.

Q5: I assume the 14x40 Techno-Stabi is manufactured in Japan and that rechargeable AA batteries are also recommended for use in these binoculars. Please advise.

A: Fijinon 14x40 Techno-Stabi binoculars are manufactured in Japan. They take four AA batteries, and you certainly can use rechargeables if you desire.
