Created to meet the need when regular binoculars and spotting scopes become ineffective, the waterproof/fogproof Nikon StabilEyes are being hailed as some of the greatest scouting tools you can own - and for good reason. These binoculars offer observers rock-steady views with spotting scope-like magnification - and in a surprisingly lightweight, compact package. Powered by AA batteries, included.
Nikon's new StabilEyes 14x40 is a professional grade roof prism marine binocular that not only offers vibration reduction both for shake and roll, but that is also fully waterproof and fogproof. By simply using the LAND mode, a user can have a marine binocular that is optimized for hand held use in fairly stable conditions, such as on dry land. Switch to ONBOARD mode for a binocular that is stabilized for use from a boat, airplane, helicopter, train or automobile.
The heart of Nikon's StabilEyes is a battery powered system of gimbaled digital servos that are actuated when the mode, (ONBOARD or LAND) is selected. This system is the only one currently in existence with the capability to dampen both common types of binocular destabilization and provide Pan and Tilt feature that enables a full range of motion while viewing.
Unlike many other stabilized products, StabilEyes is optimized as a quality binocular. It is a roof prism design that incorporates precisely cut and polished lenses and prism. All optical glass elements are treated with multiple layers of anti-reflective compounds for true color rendition, superior detail resolution, and maximum light transmission. Additionally, prisms are phase-correction coated and high reflection mirror coated for the utmost in sharpness and clarity.
The Nikon StabilEyes is central focus design with an adjustable diopter. It has an exit pupil of 2.9mm, a 56-degree apparent angle of view, and a field of view of 209' at 1,000 yards. Eye relief is 13mm, relatively long is consideration of its 14-power magnification.
StabilEyes measures 7.3" x 5.8" x 3.4" and weighs 45.8 ounces. it is ergonomically designed with a hand strap and integral finger grooves to reduce user fatique and aid in operation. StabilEyes is powered by four AA batteries and has a battery power display that blinks when batter power is getting low.

Comments about Nikon 14x40mm StabilEyes VR Image Stabilized Binoculars:
I have had two other pairs of stabilized binocs (Canon & Fuji) and found them helpful offshore.
These new Nikons are far superior. In rough water with the boat rocking and looking at another rocking boat, one gets a very bright stabile image. Easy to focus. One of the best purchases I have ever made.

Comments about Nikon 14x40mm StabilEyes VR Image Stabilized Binoculars:
For astronomy this product is great. It is very difficult to hold a 14x binocular seady enough by hand to see 4 moons of jupiter. It was not problem with these. Good for birdwatching because of the power and stability can really pick out details. Bad for birdwatching because of the relatively low light level due to high power and 40mm objective and narrow field of view. Most obvious user disadvantages are bulk and weight. I can't imagine owning any other 14x binocular, though I could not hold them steady enough without the stabileyes.

Comments about Nikon 14x40mm StabilEyes VR Image Stabilized Binoculars:
The image stabilization works great. Able to view distant objects highly magnified and really examine what you're viewing. Don't need to brace yourself against a tree or anything. Makes looking through these very enjoyable.
