Need to get up really close in a hurry? You can. The PENTAX Papilio 8.5x21 binoculars incorporate a new mechanism that can offer a minimum focusing distance of just 18 inches. That's waaay shorter than the 6.5 feet offered by other PENTAX models currently on the market.


The 8.5x21 binocular is part of an optics series called Papilio, the Latin word for butterfly, because it was specifically developed to satisfy the need for close-range observation of butterflies and other insects. All members of the series also feature go-anywhere portability, making them ideal for spectator sports, travel and hiking.

  • Multi-coated, aspherical optical elements and BaK4 prisms to produce a sharp, clear image
  • Long Eye Relief of 15mm
  • Rubber, shock-resistant housing that provides a firm, comfortable grip
  • Dual-axis eye-distance adjustment mechanism
  • Extendable helicoid-type eyepiece rings with pop-up mechanism
  • Diopter adjuster with click-stop lock mechanism

    I bought these at the last minute to do the North American Butterfly Association annual count in my area after reading reviews online and looking at ads in magazines. I was impressed by the performance from a binocular that is less than $150. I own more pairs of expensive binoculars and the glass in these Papillos is pretty good. Close focus is the most impressive quality and it is as advertised and works well. This is a perfect take-along binocular that does not tire your neck from wearing all day. Observing wildlife is not always a fair weather occurrence however, and the greatest fault that I have found with these binoculars is that they are not waterproof. That would make them just about perfect for the price.

          These work up close where regular binos don't. As a master naturalist I use them to view and identify dragonflies, butterflies, insects where my loop and binoculars are not very effective. I do wish they were waterproof.
