I bought these binoculars to compare to some high quality roof prism binoculars that are highly rated on many websites. I did a comparison between these Nikon Action Extremes and the other 8x42 roof prism binoculars and here are my specific findings: 1) The Nikon Action Extreme 8x40 is extremely bright, which makes viewing an absolute pleasure. The view was noticeably brighter than the roof prisms (which were twice the price). 2) The Nikon Action Extreme focuses reasonably close, but not quite as close as competitive roof prism binoculars. 3) The Nikon Action Extreme is larger/wider than a comparable roof prism. 4) Image quality is outstanding, easily matching (or in some cases even exceeding) more expensive roof prism binocular designs. 5) For further comparison, I tried these binoculars against a set for 1/5 the price, and the Nikon Action Extreme 8x40 was so much better that even the low price of the cheap porros wasn't attractive enough to overcome the image quality issues with the cheap brand. The Nikon Action Extreme 8x40 is, quite simply, a superb value. The other porro that should probably be considered in this price range is the Leupold Yosemite.
Ultimately, I rated the roof prisms (which again, were twice the price) as being slightly better with a wider field of view and better contrast. I also appreciated the smaller width. But with crowd-pleasing image brightness and a great in-hand feel, these Nikon Action Extreme 8x40s are a safe bet for just about everyone.
The width/size may not please some people and it will definitely take up space in a suitcase if you intend to travel with it. I absolutely hate the objective lens covers; you'd think Nikon could have spent a dollar more and gotten covers that fold down and have a retaining loop around the lens body. Focusing is not as quick as with some roof prism binos. These minor concerns (at least for me) are far outweighed by the outstanding image quality of the Nikon, the fogproof/waterproof/nitrogen-filled construction, great eye-relief for eyeglass wearers, and the great in-hand feel. One of the best affordable porro-prism binoculars on the market, as well as being just plain one of the best binoculars around. Very Highly Recommended.

It seems like a quality binocular, but there are no lens cap attachments or holders and in the first field use, we lost one. I purchased them for my husband thinking they were good for bird watching and at a distance they are but not for bringing the bird right up close. They will work well for home use. When the birds are not so far away.

I really enjoy these for easy view and use. I had 10x50 and I can see so much more with these. I'm looking forward to many years of use.

Comments about Nikon 8x40mm Action Extreme ATB Binoculars:
I've been using my 7x50 binocs that I got as a college graduation gift in 1975. I don't think the diopter on the right side worked anymore and they never seemed to focus well. My wife bought a pair of Nikon 10x50, which, although a little more powerful, provide a small field of view. This makes finding and tracking birds more difficult. She wanted me to get a new pair also when she got hers, but I stuck to my old pair I guess for sentimental reasons. I'm glad I waited because I like these 8x40's much better than hers. They provide a wider field of view and they focus crystal clear. Excellent binoculars.

Comments about Nikon 8x40mm Action Extreme ATB Binoculars:
I spent quite a bit of time checking out various binoculars. For whatever reason the Porro prism's seem to work best for me and feel better in my hands. These have a great feel to them and are very easy to focus. I carry them in a shoulder bag so the weight is no issue (they are not really that heavy anyways). They also have a great field of view which is important to me as I scan the trees. it was a tossup between a 10 x 50 and the 8 x 40. In the end I felt it by8x40 was best for my application (birding). My only complaint is that the objective covers do not stay attached to the binoculars when I take them off i.e. I have to put them away so that I do not lose them. I read many times that you get what you pay for, however, I find these binoculars to be an extraordinary value. No doubt there are better binoculars out there, however, I believe you would be hard-pressed to pay 5 times as much and get even 20% better. I think it's a case of diminishing returns. I am completely satisfied with these field glasses.

Q1: What is the difference between this model being wide field of view as opposed to the higher 10x50 or higher models of being wide angle? I am interested in bird watching, hunting, viewing animals at about a mile or so away in detail, but also having a wide field of view.
A: With binoculars the higher the magnification the smaller the field of View at 1000yds. (Similar to a Flashlight beam) With a Wide angle what they have done is positioned the prisms inside the binoculars to give a larger field of view than you would normally have in a binocular of the same magnification. For the farther the distance you are viewing the higher the magnification that you will want but the higher you go the more shaky the image becomes. So for long distance viewing you may want to consider more of a spotting scope.
Q2: How much do these binoculars weigh?
A: They weigh 30.1 oz.
