Comments about Canon 10x42L IS WP Image Stabilized Binoculars:

Amazing brightness and clarity...better than I expected for 42mm objective. A very crisp and sharp image...worthy of Canon L monicker. Pricey, but worth it. 4.2 mm exit pupil is great. The best binocular I've used. The image stabilization is remarkable. Instructions say to clean them in a bucket of water! The objective and ocular covers are a joke, though. Will need to get 52mm UV screw filters and covers. A minor irritation for this exceptional optical instrument.

Comments about Canon 10x42L IS WP Image Stabilized Binoculars:

The very short DOF (depth of field)results in stunning visuals. I was expecting very good images, and the unit delivers exceptional ones. Working within the constraints of Motion Stabilizing, there are no surprises, just grins.

Oddly, when we hand the device to each other, the adjustment for the distance between our eyes is counter intuitive. We ALWAYS move it the wrong way. Very odd.

If you have ever tried to determine the # on a navigational aid when it's a half a mile off and your in any kind of sea other than dead calm, you will have wished you had these glasses. They are fantastic. The IS on/off button works fine... They are not that heavy... But what is up with the lens covers??
C'mon Canon... I did appreciate comments with regard to putting filters or hoods or both over the objective lens. I did that straight away.

Comments about Canon 10x42L IS WP Image Stabilized Binoculars:

The image stabilization works well. I'll look at something first and then activate it. The effect is amazing. After using this, the normal shaking that occurs with out it is very distracting. When activated, then you can slowly study and enjoy what you're looking at with out concentrating on holding still constantly. 5 friends looked through these on different occasions and each independently made the same comment, "wow" when the stabilization was activated. I looked at Ziess, Swaroski, and Leica also. Color was slightly better with Swaroski, and all are lighter and more compact than the Canon, but image stabilization makes such a tremendous difference that the decision became easy. The binoculars focus easily and are rugged. The other technical factors were similar to the other high end binoculars. The major other draw back to the Canon would be the recommendation to have a dealer change the o-ring covering the battery compartment every couple of years to maintain the water proof mode. Too bad it can't be easily by the user.

Comments about Canon 10x42L IS WP Image Stabilized Binoculars:

Bought Binoc's for a trip to Alaska, we leave in a month. Water proof seemed important; have not tested that. Super with glasses, don't even have to hold against glasses to get full image. Playing with them for local birds & wildlife briefly, the images are rock steady and very crisp. I think we'll be very happy with them, especially if my wife never finds out what they cost. I was concerned that they would not be worth the price; they are!

    Customer Q & A

Q1: Canon 10x42L IS WP Image Stabilizers vs Canon 18X50 IS Image Stabilized Binocular Which would be better for amateur astronomy usage? The first seems to offer a brighter image, while the second offers better magnification.

A: One way to compare likely low-light performance is to calculate the "twilight factor" for each instrument. "Twilight factor" is simply the square root of magnification times aperture. A value of about 17 is generally considered to be the minimum for decent low-light performance. Canon's 10x42 IS binoculars have a "twilight factor" of about 20.5, indicating pretty good low-light performance. However, the "twilight factor" of the 18x50 binoculars comes out to 30, indicating they'll give not only greater magnifiction that the 10x42s, but also better low-light performance. Of course, the "twilight factor" doesn't consider such important factors as the quality of optical glass and optical coatings or overall construction, and each of these characteristics can have a significant impact on performance. In this case, though, optical charactistics and construction are at least similar, so you'll probably be more satisfied with the 18x50s for viewing the stars.
