Comments about Leica V-LUX 4 Digital Camera:
I've been a Nikon SLR user all my life from Film to Digital. For Video, it was always Sony. However, deficiencies I have found in the past from Sony's poor quality lens and Nikon's lack of capable smaller video product, I decided to try the Leica V-Lux 4. I was impress with the lens ability to zoom, from wide to telephoto with minimal noticeable chroma aberration. Much better than any Sony consumer products. The equivalent f2.8 constant and stronger 600mm tele, depth of field is shallow enough to completely blur the background even on this smaller image sensor with the subject 15 feet away. This shallow depth of field was only achievable with an SLR. Another plus is I can shoot video with all manual settings that is fully changeable during shooting like F-stop, shutter speed, manual focus (cumbersome). Still picture is excellent. HD Video is not as good but acceptable. Panasonic's electronics seems to lag behind here. At AVCHD recording 1080i, on high detailed moving or panning, I can see MPEG artifacts much more so compared to Sony's handycam of equivalent price. Although it says 1080i recording the playback quality mimics that of 720p setting.
Really need a manual focus ring that is quiet. The rear thumb wheel produces sounds and unwanted shake during adjustments.
Needs to improve video electronics to go with the superb lens. The stills are excellent but when switch to Video, much of the details are lost.
Excellent still and video reproduction for the price. Excellent quality, ease of use and is very fast shutter, focus and ready time.
